Steam names in Counter-Strike's own vocabulary — Cyrillic or Latin, up to 32 characters.

Every one fits a Steam profile name — what Dota 2 and CS2 show in game: up to 32 characters, Cyrillic included. Steam names are not unique, so none of these can be taken.

A CS2 nickname is a Steam profile name

Counter-Strike 2 has no nickname of its own: it shows your Steam profile name, and the in-game option to change your name changes exactly that. The rules follow from it.

| Rule | CS2 | Where it comes from | | --- | --- | --- | | Up to 32 characters | yes | Steamworks documentation: 32 UTF-16 characters | | Up to 128 bytes | yes | same place; plain letters never come close | | Spaces, symbols, any alphabet | allowed | it is a display name, not a login | | Unique | no | anyone can have the same name | | Changing it | any time | free, in the game or in your Steam profile |

The one trap is emoji. Steam counts most of them as two characters, so a name with three of them runs out of room noticeably sooner than counting by eye suggests.

Why these words

Each name takes an adjective from the general game bank and, most of the time, a noun from Counter-Strike's own: headshot, clutch, ace, rush, sniper, deagle, smoke, spray, flick, lurker, flash, entry, awper, peek. That gives SilentLurker, FrostClutch, VoidAwper — names that sound like CS without being the same name as every other player in the lobby.

Some come from the general bank instead — GrimReaper — so that a list of twenty is not the same dozen words reshuffled.

Say it over voice

In CS2 a name gets read out loud: "lurker on B", "ace from so-and-so". A name nobody can pronounce becomes "hey, you". Every name here is two plain words, which is the shape that survives a round of callouts.

The same name in Dota 2

A Steam profile name is shared across every game. If you also play Dota 2, this name will be there too — and there is a Dota 2 nickname generator with its own vocabulary. Names not tied to any one game are in the game nickname generator.

Questions

Where do I change my name in CS2?+

Your CS2 name is your Steam profile name. You can change it in the game, from the menu next to your name, or in Steam: Profile → Edit Profile → Profile Name. Either way it is the same name, and it changes in every Steam game at once.

How long can a CS2 name be?+

Up to 32 characters. That is the Steam profile name limit from the Steamworks documentation: 32 UTF-16 characters and 128 bytes. Most emoji and some rare symbols count as two characters, so a name full of them hits the limit sooner than it looks.

Can a name be taken?+

No. Steam profile names are not unique — thousands of players can share one. Only the account name and the profile URL are unique, and neither is your nickname.

Can I use non-Latin letters?+

Yes — Steam does not restrict a profile name to Latin. Bear in mind that in CS2 names get called out over voice, and a teammate who cannot read your alphabet cannot call you.

Why no skin or map names?+

Skins and maps belong to Valve and change from operation to operation, so a name built on them dates with the map pool. These are the words players actually use: headshot, clutch, ace, lurker, smoke.
