A Dota nickname is a Steam profile name
Dota 2 has no nickname of its own: it shows the name on your Steam profile. Everything else follows from that — the rules and where you change it.
| Rule | Dota 2 | Where it comes from | | --- | --- | --- | | Up to 32 characters | yes | Steamworks documentation: 32 UTF-16 characters | | Up to 128 bytes | yes | same place; plain letters never come close | | Spaces, symbols, any alphabet | allowed | it is a display name, not a login | | Unique | no | anyone can have the same name | | Changing it | any time | free, in your Steam profile settings |
The one trap is emoji. Steam counts most of them as two characters, so a name with three of them runs out of room noticeably sooner than counting by eye suggests.
Why these words
Each name takes an adjective from the general game bank and, most of the
time, a noun from Dota's own: carry, ganker, roamer, jungler, offlaner,
creep, courier, aegis, rune, tower, lane, dire. That gives SilentGanker,
FrostRune, RogueCourier — names that sound like Dota without being the
same name as every other player in that role.
Some come from the general bank instead — IronWraith — so that a list of
twenty is not the same dozen words reshuffled.
The same name in CS2
A Steam profile name is shared across every game. If you also play Counter-Strike, this name will be there too — and there is a CS2 nickname generator with its own vocabulary. Names not tied to any one game are in the game nickname generator.

Questions
Where do I change my name in Dota 2?+
In Steam. Dota 2 shows your Steam profile name and has no separate nickname of its own: Profile → Edit Profile → Profile Name. The new name appears in Dota and in every other Steam game at once.
How long can a Dota 2 name be?+
Up to 32 characters. That is the Steam profile name limit from the Steamworks documentation: 32 UTF-16 characters and 128 bytes. Most emoji and some rare symbols count as two characters, so a name full of them hits the limit sooner than it looks.
Can a name be taken?+
No. Steam profile names are not unique — thousands of players can share one. Only the account name and the profile URL are unique, and neither is your nickname.
Can I use non-Latin letters?+
Yes. A Steam profile name is a display name, not a login, and Steam does not restrict it to Latin. The account name you sign in with is Latin-only, but nobody sees it in a match.
Why no hero names?+
Hero names belong to Valve, a name built on one gets lost among hundreds of identical ones, and it dates with the meta. These are the words players actually use — roles, map objects, moments in a match.
