The rules, from Discord's own article
When Discord retired the #0000 discriminators it published the rules for the
new usernames. They are short:
| Rule | Discord |
| --- | --- |
| Latin letters, digits, _ and . only | yes |
| 2 to 32 characters | yes |
| Case-insensitive, forced lowercase | yes |
| No two periods in a row | yes — .a.b. allowed, a..b. not |
| Unique across Discord | yes |
No rule about a leading digit, none about a period or underscore at the ends. Everything generated here satisfies all of the above.
Username and display name
- Display name — what everyone sees in servers and DMs. Anything goes: capitals, spaces, Cyrillic, emoji. Change it whenever.
- Username — the unique handle someone types to add you. Lowercase, Latin, the thing with rules, and what this page produces.
If you searched for a "Discord nickname" you probably mean the display name — in which case there are no rules to satisfy and you can use whatever you like. Server nicknames are a third layer again, set per server.
Taken is not the same as invalid
A valid username is not a free one. The obvious short handles were claimed
within weeks of the change. Discord's advice when yours is taken is to add
digits, underscores or periods; switching the separator here from _ to .
or to none gives three different handles from the same words.
Generated on your device
No account, no request, nothing recorded. The usernames you look at and reject stay between you and your browser.
Questions
What are Discord's username rules?+
Since the 2023 change that removed the #0000 tags, a username is lowercase Latin letters, digits, underscores and periods, 2 to 32 characters long, and may not contain two periods in a row. Discord's own example: .a.b. is allowed, a..b. is not. Everything here is generated against exactly that set.
Username or display name?+
Two different things. The display name is what people see in chats and can be anything — capitals, spaces, Cyrillic, emoji — and changes as often as you like. The username is the unique handle friends add you by, and it is the one with rules. This page generates the username.
Why is everything lowercase?+
Because Discord forces it. Usernames are case-insensitive and stored lowercase; type IronWolf and you get ironwolf. Capitals belong in the display name.
Are these usernames free?+
No generator can know. Usernames are unique across all of Discord, and short obvious ones went in the first weeks of the new system. Discord suggests adding digits, underscores or periods when yours is taken — the separator option here does that for you.
How often can I change it?+
Up to two times a week, per Discord's help. The display name has no such limit.
