Steam Name Generator

One name for every Steam game — Cyrillic or Latin, up to 32 characters.

Waiting for input
Every one fits a Steam profile name — what Dota 2 and CS2 show in game: up to 32 characters, Cyrillic included. Steam names are not unique, so none of these can be taken.

One name for everything

The thing worth knowing first: there is no 'Dota name' or 'CS2 name'. Both games, and almost everything else in Steam, show the same profile name. Change it in settings and it changes across every game at once.

That is why the separate pages for Dota and CS2 differ in vocabulary rather than in rules — they draw on the words those games are played in. The rules are these, and they are the same everywhere.

| Rule | Steam | | --- | --- | | Length | up to 32 characters and 128 bytes | | Cyrillic, emoji, spaces | allowed | | Uniqueness | not required | | Changes | unlimited, history is visible |

Name, login and profile address are three things

  • Profile name — what people see in games and in your friends list. Any characters, no uniqueness needed. This is what the page generates.
  • Login — what you sign in with. Only you see it, and it cannot be changed.
  • Profile address — steamcommunity.com/id/…, set once, and it must be unique.

The first and the third are the ones that get mixed up.

Questions

How long can it be?+

Up to 32 characters and 128 bytes — both are Steamworks limits. Cyrillic costs two bytes a letter, so the 32-character limit is always the one that bites first; the generator checks both.

Is it really one name for every game?+

Yes, and this is the part people miss. Your name in Dota, in CS2 and almost everywhere in Steam is the same profile name. Change it in one place and it changes everywhere. There is no separate 'Dota name'.

Cyrillic and emoji?+

Both. Steam puts no restriction on the character set, because this is a display name rather than a login. The login is a separate field that only you see and cannot change.

Does it have to be unique?+

No, and that is where Steam differs from Telegram or Roblox. You can share a name with any number of people — you are told apart by a profile id, not by a name. So nothing here is ever 'taken'.

How often can I change it?+

As often as you like. Steam keeps the history of previous names and shows it on the profile, which is worth knowing if that matters to you.

What about the profile link?+

That is a different thing — a custom URL, set once in the profile settings, and it does have to be unique. The profile name and the profile address get confused constantly; this page is about the name.
