The rules, from Blizzard's own policy
| Rule | Character | | --- | --- | | Length | 2 to 12 characters | | Accented letters | allowed | | Numbers and symbols | not allowed | | Spaces | not allowed | | Mixed capitals | not allowed | | Uniqueness | per realm |
Everything generated here satisfies all of them. The mixed-capitals rule is
the one that trips people up: IronWolf looks like a perfectly ordinary name
and will be refused, while Ironwolf goes through.
Why the names are one word
Twelve characters is the whole budget. English compounds fit inside it, which
is why the generator keeps two halves joined — Silentfang, Frostblade,
Shadowhowl. Russian spends most of that budget on an adjective's agreement
ending, so on the Russian side it takes a single noun instead.
Character, guild and pet are different
They get confused. A guild name runs 2 to 24 characters, and mixed capitals and spaces are allowed there. A hunter pet is 2–12, a companion pet 2–16. This page is about character names.

Questions
What are the naming rules in WoW?+
From Blizzard's Naming Policy: 2 to 12 characters, accented letters allowed, numbers and symbols not, no spaces, and no mixed capitals. That last one catches people out — the game refuses IronWolf and accepts Ironwolf.
Why can I not write IronWolf?+
Blizzard calls it mixed capitals and forbids it in the policy itself. A capital is allowed only as the first letter. Almost no name generator encodes this, which is how you end up with a list where half the suggestions will be rejected.
Why one word instead of two?+
Twelve characters is the whole budget. English compounds fit inside it — Silentfang, Shadowhowl — so the generator keeps both halves. Russian spends most of the budget on an adjective's agreement ending, so there it takes a single noun instead.
The name is taken — now what?+
Character names are unique per realm, not across the whole game: the same name may well be free on another server. No generator can see what is taken; only the character creation screen will tell you.
Do guilds follow the same rules?+
No. A guild name is 2 to 24 characters and mixed capitals and spaces are allowed there. Hunter pets are 2–12, companion pets 2–16. This page generates character names.
